We start the hike in Sibiu county, Transylvania ...
... aiming towards the proud Cindrel Mountains.
Their summits of Cindrel and Frumoasa know many legends, like this one:
Cindrel, the shepherd, was very much in love with Frumoasa Muntilor (beauty of the mountains).
Unfortunately, the daughter of a giant also had her heart set on - and she was burning with jealousy.
So she asked her giant father to kill Cindrel, which he immediately did.
The mountains were trembling with grief, and Frumoasa Muntilor cried bitterly until her death.
Their tears fed the mountain lakes Iezerul Mare and Iezerul Mic. In their crystal clear waters ...
... the peaks of Cindrel (2.255 m) und Frumoasa (2.168 m) are reflected to this day.
The ascent into the Cindrel Mountains takes you through the oldest beech forest of the continent.
Unique plants and rare animals live here, some of which you will hardly meet, though.
On the Poiana Soarelui (sunny glade) we find dozens of hand-carved sculptures ...
... before reaching the mountain meadows ...
... overlooking the forested mountains ...
... and the expanse of the valley.
Up here, shepherds are no rare sight ...
... as this mountain range is considered their homeland in Romania.
The sheep's cheese produced here travels a long way even to Bucharest and Hungary.
Plus there is a delicious shepherd's goulash ...
... and grilled polenta dumplings.
Hikers will often be escorted.
We leave the mountain meadows ...
... turning onto a hiking trail ...
... passing a mountain shelter ...
... and arrive at a pretty spot not far from the summit.

... and soon the forms alternate between rocks and canyons.
